A long-term obstacle that has been preventing many proposed wind farms from going ahead has now been removed, thanks to a new ‘wind turbine-friendly’ radar.
Currently, a large number of planned wind turbines are on hold, or have been rejected during the planning process, because of issues with disrupting radar at local airports or Ministry of Defence (MoD) sites.
Well, now there’s a solution – for the big guys at least. The MoD has just successfully tested a ‘wind turbine-friendly’ radar, which is not adversely affected by wind turbines.
This development will mean that 4 GW of offshore wind turbine projects that have been stalled by radar interference issues can now go ahead.
The only drawback is that wind turbine project developers have to pay for this new radar to be installed… So it is unlikely to be a solution for more modest wind projects.
