Distribution Network Operators have to configure their systems to deliver power at all times of day, even when demand is at its highest. Sometimes, this stretches the network and can ultimately lead to the need for expensive reinforcement work. FEC's familiarity with energy use on rural systems can help in understanding and influencing demand profiles, and delivering cheaper alternatives than reinforcing the networks.

Case history – Biffa Waste Management

Biffa, the waste management company, provided funding for FEC to look at the mass balance of agricultural waste in the UK. The study revealed that there was potential for embedded generation from waste, in some of the most remote and weakest electricity network areas and that its adoption could help avoid major network reinforcement.
