Alternative energy, lower emissions
5 July 2007
FEC Services is helping the Horticulture Development Council to develop a new energy strategy to guide future projects aimed at helping to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and cut emissions.

Over the past six months HDC has been working with colleagues, growers and industry consultants to determine the energy R&D and information needs of each HDC crop sector. To give an insight into the contributions the various technologies might make, HDC commissioned FEC Services to make a study on the various energy saving options that may be relevant to growers. We have now produced outline recommendations for industry consultation, highlighting where future HDC investment in research, development, demonstration and communications is required.

Following on from the initial study a consultation process is now being carried out in conjunction with a grower working group nominated by HDC sector panels, to refine the strategy and relevance of the technologies to each crop sector. It is expected to be complete by the end of the summer, and the strategy will then be published.
